The Lost Khaki Girls by Ronke Odewumi

The Lost Khaki Girls by Ronke Odewumi published in February is an absolute treat.

Set in Nigeria, in the cosmopolitan city of Jos, ‘The Lost Khaki Girls’ is a compelling story that follows three young women in their journey of self-discovery. Ronke weaves the lives of Adunni, Becky and Jadesola together in a remarkable way telling their story with vivid imagination, witty humour and conversations laced with cultural nuances and complexities.

Adunni is a conundrum and as distant as she is warm; Jadesola’s vulnerability hides a core of strength while Becky is a character best discovered on your own.

Ronke has built these characters so masterfully that you can actually picture them and in some instances relate them to people you have known or met.  For someone who has been through the NYSC experience in Nigeria, the setting can be at once familiar and nostalgic

The intriguing story is entertaining yet full of suspense that keeps you gripped. Ronke develops the plot deliberately to keep you reading; with an ending that is just not what you were expecting, it will have you laughing in one breath and hopeful in the next.

The Lost Khaki Girls offers a window’s view in to the complexities of African cultures while telling a story of love, betrayal and murder.
